High Speed CAN Communication Bus

What Does This Mean U0001?

This trouble code refers to lost communication with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) through the CAN bus communication network. CAN stands for Controller Area Network.

This is a generic code, which means that it applies to most vehicles. Not all vehicles use this code, furthermore, vehicles using this code may or may not have specific causes or suggested repair procedures.

It is wise to refer to the vehicle's service manual for a full description of the code along with the location of the CAN bus and all diagnostic procedures.

The 'high speed' CAN bus refers to a hard-wired communications line between the TIPM and the various control modules (of which there are many) that initiate movement or activity for all the vehicle's functions.

There is a high and low speed circuit within the vehicle. Activities that occur many times a second require a very high-speed method of communicating. Each module has its own identification code to aid the TIPM in identifying the module with which it's communicating. Conversation in the binary form.

A problem has occurred in the CAN bus connector, the harness itself, a module or the TIPM.

Symptoms U0001

1 Code U0001 will set and the check engine light will illuminate
2 Vehicle's key alarm may activate intermittently
3 Vehicle may require several attempts to start
4 Vehicle may stall and be difficult to restart

Possible Causes U0001

1 Loose, corroded, bent or short circuit in the CAN bus harness
2 An error has occurred in the TIPM logic
3 Low voltage due to a defective battery or corroded terminals
4 Defective or shorted control module
5 Control module has lost memory and will not restart due to a temporary power loss. May need reprogramming or a ping to start
6 Defective TIPM

Solutions & Repair Steps U0001

It's been my experience over the years, that wiring harnesses rarely have a short or open within the harness. That is not to say it can't happen, however, unless the wires are disturbed for some reason, they are rarely the problem.

The majority or problems with automotive wiring harnesses are located in their connectors to the computer or the end user, such as a control module. If not the connector, the next suspect is the computer or module.
